In this contour-inventive "Desolation Row" we first hear Dylan sing a descending figure low in his register, in even note values, at "mem'ries in a trunk" and "friend some jealous monk." The effect is almost like a comic bass in Italian opera. The second figure is a stuttered repetition of two notes, which he sings a whopping twenty-two times, again to a big cheer.
