Dylan's performance of Guthrie's song at this concert from his first year in New York differs dramatically from both his own recording of the song in the previous year at Karen Wallace's apartment (heard in audio examples 2.2 and 2.3), as well as from Guthrie's own recording of it (audio example 2.6). Dylan's vocal phrasing here is rhythmically very free, resulting in a performance that is expansive, reverential, even experimental—a connoisseur's rendition.
