Dylan's final live "Hard Rain"—until he briefly revived it seven years later, in summer 2024—is a rather ragged affair. In the climactic verse 5 he begins with speech inflections for the parent's two questions, before settling into an insistently repeated vocal figure for the son's answers. The refrain that follows is an exultant release of tension.
